The Breheimen National Park ( Norwegian Breheimen nasjonalpark ) is a mountain and glacier- rich national park around the Breheimen mountain range in the Norwegian provinces of Innlandet and Vestland . The name of the area as Breheimen (home of the glaciers) refers to the glaciers. The park was founded on August 7th, 2009 in order to "[...] protect this large, wild piece of nature with its representative ecosystem and its landscape [...]" .

The park belongs to the municipalities of Skjåk , Lom and Luster and is 1,691 km² in size. Since the national park borders on the five nature reserves Strynefjellet landskapsvernområde , Mysubytta landskapsvernområde , Høydalen landskapsvernområde , Mørkridsdalen landskapsvernområde og Vigdalen landskapsvernområde , and Høyrokampen nature reserve is 79 km. The park is also almost adjacent to the Jostedalsbreen National Park .

Geography, landscape and geology

The landscape is characterized by glaciers , waterfalls , lush valleys , mountains , but also by cultural landscapes.

In the park more than 6000 years old evidence of human civilization such as hunting bows , remains of farms and paths have been found.
