The Møysalen National Park ( Norwegian Møysalen nasjonalpark ) is a Norwegian national park on the island of Hinnøya of the Vesterålen Islands in Nordland and belongs to the municipalities of Lødingen , Hadsel and Sortland . In the south and west it borders on the Møysalen nature reserve .

The park was founded in 2003 to protect the local alpine coastal landscape with its various ecosystems, animals and plants and cultural heritage from damage and destruction.

The responsible information center is the Nordland nasjonalparksenter at the E6 in the municipality of Saltdal , which is responsible for all national parks in Nordland.

Geography, landscape and geology

The national park is one of the smallest in Norway. In the center of the park is the 1.262 moh. high Møysalen . The fjord arm Vestpollen, the innermost part of the Øksfjord, ends at the eastern foot of the mountain . In the eastern part of the park are the Storsnytinden (996 moh.) And the Nordtinden (883 moh.).

The park has an impressive and varied landscape that extends from the sea to the high mountains, with gorges, valleys, deltas and peaks over 1000 meters. The west of the park in particular is alpine.

Flora and fauna

The flora in the park is characterized by the cool, humid sea climate. Many ferns from the striped fern family grow in the fertile soil areas in the park . In steeper and less fertile parts, especially ferns of the worm fern family. Typical beach vegetation grows around the Vestpollen Fjord. H. many different grasses on sandy ground.

The bird of prey species gyrfalcon , kestrel , merlin , buzzard , white-tailed eagle and golden eagle live and breed in the park .

Relics of reindeer herding and various hunting and fishing methods have been found in Møysalen National Park. Mining was also carried out around Vestpollen Fjord. Parts of the old tunnels are still preserved today.

Administration and tourism

There are two marked hiking trails on Møysalen, one in the southwest, from Nordbotn, and one in the southeast, from Vestpollen Fjord. A few kilometers north of the park is the Snytindhytta tourist hut , which is connected to the park by a hiking trail on the E10 .
