The Jomfruland National Park ( Norwegian Jomfruland nasjonalpark ) is a 117 km² national park in the south of Norway . The park is located around the islands of Jomfruland and Stråholmen in the archipelago in the province of Vestfold og Telemark and belongs to the municipality of Kragerø . 98% of the park consists of water. The park opened on December 16, 2016.

The park was established to protect one of the largest terminal moraines in Scandinavia and to preserve biodiversity on land and water.

Geography, landscape and geology

The park consists of 98% water. The large marine area of ​​the national park consists largely of the seabed with lush ground vegetation and marine animals. The land area includes the flat islands of Jomfruland and Stråholmen as well as a few smaller islands and islets. Approximately 15 km² consists of kelp forests , seagrass forests , soft soil deposits, shell sand and moraines of national value. The landscape by the sea is characterized by gravel and beach walls . Inland there are open pastures and meadows . The terminal moraine formed at the end of the last ice age dominates the entire length of the national park, both at sea and on land. The pebble beach on the sea side of Jomfruland is approx. 7 km long.

Flora and fauna

The islands of Jomfruland and Stråholmen serve as resting places for various migratory birds . The bird station Jomfruland has registered more than 300 different bird species, which is the second highest occurrence in Norway. Among other things, nightingales , bloodlines , red backs and carminers have been spotted here.

Tourism and administration

The area is a popular recreational area. The island of Jomfruland in particular, but also Stråholmen, as well as the other islands and Stangnes on the mainland, are very popular. In the national park there are 22 areas with a total area of ​​150  hectares that are open for public outdoor activities.
