Teresa Belloc

Teresa Belloc or Teresa Belloc-Giorgi (born Maria Teresa Ottavia Faustina Trombetta ; * July 2, 1784 in San Benigno Canavese ; † May 13, 1855 in San Giorgio Canavese ) was a famous Italian opera singer ( mezzo-soprano ), who appeared in operas by Rossini , Mayr and Paër performed.

Life

Her parents were Carlo Trombetta and Agnese Clerc; her father was a Jacobin and was in French service and her mother is said to have Georgian roots according to Regli (who is not always reliable) . Teresa received her first musical education in Turin and possibly Paris (according to Regli).

She made her debut on September 1, 1801 at the Teatro Carignano in Turin as Laurina in Giovanni Simone Mayr's L'equivoco, ossia Le bizzarrie d'amore , under the name "Maria Teresa Giorgi". There she also sang in Paër's La Virtù al cimento . Mayrs Laurina sang it in her first appearance at La Scala in Milan on April 2nd, 1803, this time under the name "Belloc-Giorgi", since she had apparently married Angelo Belloc, a doctor in the French army. At that time she already had "around 17 main roles" in her repertoire. Milan remained the center of her career for more than two decades.

She had great success in Paisiello's Nina , with whom she became known and which she sang in Paris in 1803. There she was also admired in Martín y Solers Una cosa rara and as Griselda von Paër . According to Fétis, her voice was "a mezzo-soprano of small volume but very pure tonal quality, and her style was generally expressive and moving" (" son accent était en général expressif et touchant ").

As a result, the Belloc went back to Italy, where it performed in Genoa , Venice and again in Milan. Her most important roles included some of the operas that Giovanni Simone Mayr wrote for her: Zeliska in Mayr's L'amor coniugale (premiered July 26, 1805 in Padua), and the female title role in Adelasia ed Aleramo at La Scala in Milan. After the first performance of the latter on December 26, 1806, the Giornale di Milano wrote: “Signora Belloc has masterly skills and a voice - although perhaps a little weak for our theater - of very large scope and very rare flexibility. She also masters the art of acting wonderfully ”. The interpretation of Adelasia was a personal “triumph” for Teresa Belloc, and she also sang this role in Turin (1807), Genoa (1809), Naples (1810) and Rome (1814).

In Turin in 1808 she was the prima donna in the premiere of Vincenzo Federici's La conquista delle Indie Orientali ; a few years later she also sang in Turin in the world premieres of Berenice di Armenia by Soliva (December 1816) and Bonfichi's Abradate e Dircea (January 1817).

Between June 1810 and March 1811 she was in Naples , where she did not appear again because of Isabella Colbran's "almost unrestricted rule".

Rossini wrote the roles of Isabella in L'inganno felice (1812, Venice) and Ninetta in his Semiseria La gazza ladra (1817, Milan) for the Belloc . Another important role of the Belloc was the title role in Rossini's Tancredi .

In 1818 she traveled to London , where she performed under the name "Bellochi". Then she went back to Milan, and in the following years sang as prima donna in the world premieres of Mercadante's Elisa e Claudio (premiered October 30, 1821) and Amleto (premiered December 26, 1822). Belloc was also the first interpreter of Giulia in Giovanni Pacini's opera La Vestale on February 6, 1823.

After a brilliant career, she retired from the stage in 1828 and lived in San Giorgio Canavese from then on. She is said to have been rich and a special darling of the Duchess of Parma Maria Luigia. Teresa Belloc-Giorgi died on May 13, 1855 after suffering from gout .
