Archipelago in front of Rogaland

An archipelago ( Swedish skärgård , Norwegian skjærgård ) is a coastal landscape consisting mainly of skerries . In German, the term is mainly used for regions in the North European and North Atlantic areas such as the northern Baltic Sea , off the Norwegian coast and off Greenland .

Well-known archipelagos are the Stockholm archipelago , the Gothenburg archipelago , the Blekinge archipelago and the archipelago sea .

Other names

The translation of Swedish skärgård found in common German-Swedish dictionaries is simply archipelago or archipelago . The term archipelago , which has become common in the German-speaking area, is based on a folk etymological interpretation of the Swedish word gård as "garden". In Swedish, however, like the related English yard , gård does not mean “garden” but “courtyard”, e.g. B. in the idiom att bo över gården (to live in the back house, literally: “to live beyond the yard”) or in word combinations like kyrkogård (churchyard, cemetery) or hästgård (riding stable). All of the words mentioned are related.
