The national parks in Northern Norway (Stabbursdalen has number 26) |
The Stabbursdalen National Park ( Norwegian : Stabbursdalen nasjonalpark ) is a national park in northern Norway . Founded in 1970 and expanded in 2002, it now covers a protected area of 747 km². The park is located at the south-eastern end of the Porsanger peninsula in the area of the municipalities of Porsanger and Hammerfest , in the Fylke Troms og Finnmark and borders the Stabbursdalen nature reserve . The Stabbursnes nature reserve is also nearby . Together, an area of around 1,000 km² is under protection in these three areas. To the east of the park are Lakselv and the Porsangerfjord .
Geography, landscape and geology
The park encompasses the Stabburstal and the Gáissene mountain range with the 1,139 meter high Čohkarášša in the southeast . Landscapes typical for Finnmark can be found here : barren high fjell , open plateaus, narrow ravines , birch forests and light pine forests .
The landscape was largely shaped by the inland ice movements during the last ice age in the Quaternary . The 60 km long Stabburselva River was created by the meltwater streams of the glaciers of that time. The lower part of the Stabbursdalen is a plain that was created by the accumulation of rubble and sand coming from the glaciers and by weathering over the millennia.
Flora and fauna
The national park is home to the world's northernmost pine forest with trees up to 500 years old. The Stabburstal represents the northernmost habitat for many animal species.
The bird world is very diverse. Thus, besides goldeneye and geese sawyers also bramblings and dwarf buntings . The most common bird of prey is the osprey , followed by the merlin .
The largest mammals in Stabbursdalen are elk , reindeer and wolverine .
The Stabburselva has a stable stock of salmon . For this reason, the park is very popular with sport fishermen. There are also large stocks of char , trout and pike in the rivers in the national park .
Tourism and administration
The information center responsible for the park is the Stabbursnes Naturhus og Museum , which is also the northernmost national park center in Scandinavia .
