Porsanger ( North Sami : Porsáŋgu ; Kven and Finnish : Porsanki ) is a Norwegian municipality in the province ( Fylke ) Troms og Finnmark . 3998 inhabitants live in the 4,874 km² community (as of February 27, 2020) . The municipality borders on the neighboring municipalities of Hammerfest , Måsøy , Nordkapp , Lebesby , Tana , Karasjok and Alta .
The most important place is Lakselv (Sami: Leavdnja ; Finnish: Lemmijoki ), where the administrative center of the municipality is also located. The municipality is named after the Porsangerfjord , which flows into the European Arctic Ocean.
Since January 1, 2004, Porsanger, where Norwegians , Sami and Kvenens live, has been the first and only municipality in Norway to have three equivalent name forms. It is also the only officially tricultural and trilingual municipality in Norway.
Visitors traveling overland to the North Cape must cross the municipality of Porsanger.
