Harstad ( North Sami : Háštá ) is a Norwegian city ​​and forms its own municipality in the province ( Fylke ) Troms og Finnmark . It is the second largest city in the former province of Troms and the third largest in Northern Norway and has had municipal rights since 1904.

Harstad is about 250 km north of the Arctic Circle on the island of Hinnøya . The municipality comprises the northeastern part of Hinnøya and the islands of Grytøya , Sandsøya and Bjarkøya to the north . Harstad borders Kvæfjord in the west and Tjeldsund in the province ( Fylke ) Nordland in the south. In the southeast, the Tjeldsund Bridge connects Hinnøya with Skånland Municipality on the mainland . Harstad borders on Ibestad to the east . The highest point is the Sætertind in the south of the municipality with 1,094 m. The midnight sun shines in Harstad from May 23rd to July 19th. The polar night lasts from November 19th to January 16th.

The city is the center of oil / gas production in Northern Norway and lives from trade , the local shipyards , the military and administration . There is a daily speedboat connection through the Solbergfjord and Gisund to Finnsnes and on to Tromsø . The nearest airport is in Evenes ( Harstad / Narvik Airport ). Harstad is also the landing stage for Hurtigruten ships .

On January 1, 2013, Bjarkøy was incorporated into Harstad.
