Trondenes Church

The Evangelical Lutheran Church of Trondenes in Trondenes near Harstad is the northernmost medieval stone church in Norway . Although the time of construction is often given as around 1250, dendrochronological studies have shown that it must be the third church building at this point and that it was completed shortly after 1434.

In the Middle Ages, the church was the central church for the whole of Northern Norway and contains a wealth of furnishings. One of the winged altars comes from a workshop in Lübeck , either that of the late Gothic sculptor Bernt Notke , who was one of the largest art exporters in Northern Europe at the time, or of the imperialissima master who was close to him . The Hanseatic city of Lübeck was as Oberhof , for the establishment of Hanse on the German Bridge in Bergen responsible and controlled at that time trade in Norway. Stockfish and clipfish produced in Northern Norway were imported from Bergen and sold as fasting foods across Europe .
