The Gisund - the name means Krummer Sund - is a 35 km long strait between the island of Senja and the Norwegian mainland in the Fylke (province) Troms og Finnmark .

The sound

The sound connects the Finnfjord , which joins the Solbergfjord to the north , in the south with the Malangsfjord (Malangen) in the north. Administratively it belongs to the Lenvik municipality .

The Gisund Bridge at Finnsnes

The Gisund begins in the south about 1 km south of the 1,147 m long Gisundbrua (Gisund Bridge), which crosses it at Finnsnes , and winds in several, sometimes narrow curves to the north. At its narrowest point at Gibostad it is less than 600 m wide, at its widest between Skognes and Leiknes it is about four kilometers. At the Gisund Bridge it is one kilometer wide.

The sound is the main waterway for coastal traffic between Harstad and Tromsø and is used by Hurtigruten ships . At Leiknesodden there has been a lot of ground contact because of a moraine that juts into a narrow underwater. So since 2009 the most difficult areas have been dredged for NOK 130 million .

traffic

In 1972 the Gisundbrua between Finnsnes and Silsand was inaugurated, which leads the provincial road FV86 from the mainland to the island of Senja, the second largest island in Norway. It is 1,147 m long and has 25 arches; the main arch with the ship passage is 142.5 meters wide and has a clear height of 41 m.

Until 1985 there was also a ferry connection across the Gisund between Bjorelvnes on the mainland and Gibostad on Senja.
