Location of the island |
Senja ( North Sami Sazza ) is the second largest island in Norway and belongs to Fylke Troms og Finnmark . It is located about 350 km north of the Arctic Circle . On January 1, 2020, Berg , Torsken , Tranøy and Lenvik were merged to form Senja municipality .
geography
The island is separated from the mainland in the south by the Tranøyfjord and the Solbergfjord and in the east by the Gisund . In the north, the Malangsfjord separates them from the island of Kvaløy . The western side facing the sea is rocky and rugged and characterized by a dramatic fjord landscape. The few fishing villages are in sheltered bays or on the archipelago (Husøy). The east side facing the mainland has a rather lovely character and enables agriculture and forestry.
climate
Despite the high latitude , the climate is comparatively mild because of the Gulf Stream .
Commune
The area of the island was divided between four different municipalities until January 1, 2020. As part of the municipal reform in Norway , the entire island was merged into the Senja municipality of the same name from 2020. In addition, an area on the mainland was incorporated into the new municipality.
traffic
You can reach Senja over the Gisund Bridge from Finnsnes (mainland) to Silsand . There are car ferries from Andenes (Andøya / Vesterålen ) to Gryllefjord (only in summer), from Brensholmen ( Kvaløya ) to Botnhamn and from Harstad ( Hinnøya / Vesterålen) to Skrolsvik.
Some of the fishing villages on the northwest coast (Husøy, Fjordgård, Senjahopen, Skaland) have only been connected to the road network by tunnels since the mid-1980s .
economy
Geographically, fishing is practiced almost exclusively on the west coast , while agriculture predominates on the east side .
