In the 16th and 17th centuries, Dutch whalers took advantage of the favorable location for the sperm whales' range . Shortly before the coast, the seabed drops here to a depth of 1000 m; In these depths, the sperm whales hunt octopuses and regularly come up to breathe.
As Andenes is located on the northern tip of Vesterålen, the place is very popular with tourists. In addition to the famous lighthouse, which can also be climbed, there is a polar museum and the Hisnakul exhibition . Andenes can be reached by road via RV 82 from the south; Between May 28th and August 29th there is also a ferry connection which connects Andenes with Gryllefjord on the island of Senja . On the outskirts of Andenes is the regional airfield Andøya lufthavn, Andenes , which is also used by the military. From there the airline Widerøe's Flyveselskap offers daily flight connections to Bodø and Tromsø . Since 2012 there have been direct flights with Norwegian Air Shuttle to and from Oslo twice a week . There is a large campsite right at the airport.
