Lyme Regis ( pronunciation : [ ˌlaɪmˈriːdʒɪs ]) is a small town in the south-west of England's county of Dorset . It has 4406 inhabitants (2001).
Lyme Regis is located on the Jurassic Coast , a stretch of coast on the English Channel , on the border between Dorset and Devon and is also known as the "Pearl of Dorset". In the 13th century this city was one of the most important British ports. The originally Latin suffix Regis ( English pronunciation : [ ˈriːdʒɪs ]) is the genitive singular from Latin Rex and means "of the king" or "belonging to the king".
Lyme Regis is best known for "The Cobb", a powerful, characteristic harbor wall. "The Cobb" plays a role in the novel Persuasion by Jane Austen and in the film The French Lieutenant's Woman , which goes back to the novel of the same name by the author John Fowles . The friendly town has many beautiful houses that stretch up a slope. Lyme Regis certainly deserves the title “typically English”. Lyme Regis is located on Lyme Bay between Weymouth and Torquay .
Lyme Regis was home to the well-known early paleontologist Mary Anning . It is known for the fossils she found in the cliffs there and belongs to the so-called Jurassic Coast , a stretch of coast that has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2001 . From 1923 to 1927, Alexander Sutherland Neill's Democratic School was located in a house on the "Summer Hill" . It got the name Summerhill School with which it should become world famous one day.
