Tjeldsund ( North Sami Dielddanuorri ) is a Norwegian municipality in the province ( Fylke ) Troms og Finnmark . As part of the municipal reform in Norway , the two municipalities of Tjeldsund in the province of Nordland and Skånland in Troms were merged under the name Tjeldsund as a new municipality in the new province of Troms og Finnmark on January 1, 2020 . Evenskjer, the former center of the more populous municipality of Skånland, was chosen as the administrative seat of the municipality. (The administrative seat of the former municipality of Tjeldsund in Nordland was Hol).
The name of the municipality is derived from the sound of Tjeldsund , which separates Norway's largest island, Hinnøya , from the mainland and the island of Tjeldøya .
In the municipality there is Norges Brannskole (NBSK), a training center for firefighters with an attached boarding school.
