Fangatau , also called Nakai-erua , is a small atoll in the Tuamotu Archipelago in French Polynesia . The elongated atoll is 8 km long, 3.5 km wide and has a land area of 6 km². The approximately 11 km² large lagoon of the atoll has no access to the sea. Administratively, Fangatau belongs to the municipality of the same name , to which the neighboring atoll Fakahina also belongs.
Fangatau has 121 inhabitants, who mainly live in the main town of Teana . The island's airfield opened in 1978.
The atoll was discovered on July 10, 1820 by the Baltic German Admiral Fabian Gottlieb von Bellingshausen , who called the atoll "Araktschejew" .
