Kaukura is an atoll in the Tuamotu Archipelago in French Polynesia .
geography
The nearest atoll, Arutua, is 16 km to the east. The atoll is 48 km long and 14 km wide. There is only one navigable access to the sea, Passe Faape on the northeast flank of the atoll, 200 meters west of Motu Moturaa. Geographically, the atoll belongs to the Palliser Islands , administratively to the municipality of Arutua .
The only village in the atoll, Raitahiti , is on the inside (lagoon side, east) of the main island of Tuteva in the northwest. The Aérodrome de Kaukura ( IATA KKR, ICAO NTGK) airfield, which opened in 1994, is also located on the outside .
The tourism has the traditional fishing displaced as a main industry.
history
The atoll was discovered in 1722 by the Dutch captain Jakob Roggeveen .
