Ahunui is an atoll in the southern Pacific Ocean and belongs to the Tuamotu Archipelago in French Polynesia . Administratively, the atoll belongs to the municipality of Hao .
The atoll is 6 km in diameter and its land area is 5.7 km². The climate on Ahunui is tropical.
history
Ahunui was discovered in 1826 by the British Frederick William Beechey , who gave it the name Byam Martin . Ahunui is also known as Cockburn .
The atoll's lagoon is completely enclosed by land so that it cannot be navigated by watercraft from the sea. However, there is a boat dock in the northwest of the atoll along with huts and a fresh water tank. The island is not permanently inhabited.
Coconut palms grow on the atoll and it also provides habitat for various species of birds. In the water at Atoll called wee-wee comes pearl oyster ( Pinctada maculata ) ago.
