Morocco is an atoll in the Tuamotu Archipelago in French Polynesia . The atoll is located 53 km southeast of Hikueru and is only separated from Ravahere by a 2 km wide waterway . The extension of the triangular atoll reaches a width of 21 km and a length of 20 km.
Morocau and Ravahere form the Îles Deux Groupes . Morocco belongs to the municipality of Hikueru . The most important place on the island is Vaiori , this is located on an island at the northern end of the atoll.
history
Louis Antoine de Bougainville discovered the island in 1768.
In 1903 the atoll was hit by a severe storm that killed over 100 residents.
The lagoon of Marokau was one of the most important from the 19th century to 1965 for pearl cultivation of the Tuamotu archipelago.
Today the residents live mainly from copra production . Many coconut trees grow on the islands and motus of the atoll .
