Vanavana , also known as Kurataki or Huataki , is a small atoll in the Tuamotu Archipelago in the Pacific Ocean . It is 35 miles west of Tureia Atoll , its closest neighbor. It belongs politically to French Polynesia and there to the municipality of Tureia .
Vanavana is an uninhabited, narrow, oval atoll approximately 5 km long and 3.2 km wide. The lagoon of the atoll measures 3 km², the land area about 2 km².
Vanavana was discovered by Frederick William Beechey in 1826 and named Barrow Island after Sir John Barrow .
On October 10, 1941, the crew of the German auxiliary cruiser Atlantis used the island to go ashore for the first time in ten months for a short time.
