Tekokota was discovered by James Cook in 1773 . He called the atoll Doubtful ("The Unknown"). A few months later, the atoll was sighted by Spanish sailors who gave it new names. The name "La del Peligro" (The Dangerous) was given to it by José de Andía y Varela and Domingo de Boenechea called it "Los Mátires" (The Deadly) after seeing it a few days later as de Andia .
It is only used occasionally by fishermen and for harvesting and processing coconuts into copra .
