José de Andía y Varela

José de Andía y Varela (* around 1730 in the Basque Country (province of Bizkaia ), † after 1774) was a captain and explorer in the Spanish service.

The Spanish viceroy in Peru , Manuel d'Amat i de Junyent , sent a total of four expeditions to the South Pacific during his tenure . The aim of these ventures was to determine to what extent the English and French colonization efforts of the Pacific islands were successful and to expand the Spanish influence on the South Pacific. Furthermore, the Catholic mission should be promoted or established in this part of the world.

After Domingo de Boenechea had proven himself on the second voyage and annexed Tahiti ("Isla de Amat") for Spain, Amat also gave him command of the third Spanish expedition to the Pacific. While Boenechea commanded the lead ship, the frigate Aguila , himself, the smaller escort ship, the Bark Jupiter , was commanded by José Andia. The ships left Callao on September 20, 1774 with a south-westerly course. On October 6, 1774, they were separated. Both sailed one after the other on the same course, but out of sight, to the Tuamotu Archipelago , where Boenechea discovered several islands for Europe. Some discoveries were probably made by Andia, although they are attributed to Boenechea as the leader of the expedition: Amanu , whom José Andia baptized "Isla de las Animas" and Tatakoto , called "San Narciso" by Boenechea. Tekokota , which Andia called "Los Martires", had already passed James Cook in 1773.

Little is known about Andia's fate after this expedition. Allegedly he turned to the sea trade between Chile and Peru.
