Otfried Nassauer
Otfried Nassauer (* 1956 in Siegen ; † October 1 or 2, 2020 in Berlin ) was a German journalist and peace researcher who “ shaped the discussions about current German and international military and security policy for over four decades ”.
Life
Nassauer studied Protestant theology in Hamburg . In the 1980s and 1990s he worked as a non-party in the specialist group “Peace and International Affairs” of the Greens as well as in the federal working group “Peace” of the Greens.
Shortly after the fall of the Berlin Wall , he organized a meeting between officers from the National People's Army from the Friedrich Engels military academy in Dresden and those from the command academy of the Bundeswehr in Hamburg.
In 1991 Nassauer founded the Berlin Information Center for Transatlantic Security (BITS). As its head for almost three decades, he dealt in particular with security policy developments such as arms control of nuclear weapons and land mines as well as German arms exports .
Nassauer published in the taz , the Neues Deutschland , the Spiegel , the Friedensforum , the Junge Welt , Compact , Magazin 2000plus and The European . With more than 150 contributions from 1993 onwards, Nassauer shaped the NDR-Info series Armed Forces and Strategies in particular .
Appreciation
Nassauer died on the night of October 1 to October 2, 2020 at the age of 64 in Berlin. The taz editor-in-chief Ulrike Winkelmann described it in her obituary as "irreplaceable" and as a walking encyclopedia :
"But Otfried knew every damn screw on the combat drones that the Bundeswehr wanted to procure, on the submarines that were delivered to Israel , on the Leopard tanks that Saudi Arabia wanted to buy from Krauss-Maffei Wegmann ."
The security policy journalist Thomas Wiegold , who especially for his blog Eyes straight ahead! known, described him as "one of the best - and at the same time least publicly known - experts on German armaments policy". Michael Brzoska , long-time director of the Hamburg Institute for Peace Research and Security Policy (IFSH), also praised Nassauer as "one of the most prominent German military experts and peace researchers". He emphasized:
“Otfried Nassauer burned for what he did. [...] Commitment to the things that were important to him went to Otfried Nassauer through personal recognition and material remuneration. Above all, he was interested in education, in empowering others in non-governmental organizations , science and politics to question official representations and positions as critically as he did himself. "
The New Germany raised his role as a multiplier for the peace movement out:
“Otfried Nassauer will be missing. He was a good friend and colleague to some, a clever partner to many and an extremely important advisor for tens of thousands - without their knowing it - when they stood up against the mania for arms and the dangers of war. "
