Berlin Information Center for Transatlantic Security
The Berlin Information Center for Transatlantic Security ( BITS ) is a private peace research institute and specialist information center based in Berlin-Prenzlauer Berg .
history
In June 1991 peace researchers from the former GDR and the Federal Republic of Germany founded the institute, which has since dealt with questions of foreign and security policy, arms control and disarmament as well as military and military-political issues. The center is currently headed by Otfried Nassauer . The BITS-Förderverein eV supports the information center.
Content focus and activity
Focus
The focus of the content work is or was:
- Nuclear weapons, nuclear strategy and nuclear weapons policy of the nuclear-armed states
- the development of NATO and NATO-Russia policy
- the emergence and development of the European Security and Defense Policy (ESDP)
- Developments in German security policy and the Bundeswehr
- Arms exports and arms industry
- Particularly inhumane weapons and their treatment under international law ( landmines , cluster munitions , "non-lethal" weapons)
activity
The information center maintains an Internet presence through which the publications of the center are accessible as well as access to collections of official documents (e.g. military service regulations, arms control treaties and international humanitarian law treaties) and thematically structured collections (e.g. Iran's nuclear program , German arms export policy or the development of NATO strategies). Databases available online enable access to the Internet presence of other institutions that work on security policy issues and the meaning of military and security policy abbreviations.
The institute is used by the media as a source for arms policy issues. Otfried Nassauer serves as a commentator.
Specialized library
The institute maintains a publicly accessible specialist library that can be used by appointment with the staff. Around 7000 specialist books, around 150 specialist journals and well over 20,000 studies and primary sources are available there.
