Paul Georg Schäfer (born January 18, 1949 in Mainz ) is a German politician ( Die Linke ).

Life and work

After graduating from high school in 1967 at the Neusprachliches Gymnasium in Oppenheim , Schäfer studied political science and sociology in Mainz and Marburg, which he completed in 1978 as a sociologist . During his studies he organized himself in the MSB Spartakus , of which he was Deputy Federal Chairman (1975). From 1970 to 1971 he was a university advisor in the AStA at the Philipps University of Marburg and from 1971 to 1972 press officer for the Association of German Student Associations . From 1979 to 1983 Schäfer was an advisor to the board of the Association of Democratic Scientists and in 1983 switched to the journal Wissenschaft und Frieden as editor .

From 1991 to 1994 Schäfer was a research assistant to the Bundestag member Katrin Fuchs ( SPD ) and from 1995 to 1998 to the member of Gerhard Zwerenz ( PDS ). Subsequently, until 2002 he was an advisor to the PDS parliamentary group for foreign and security policy. After that he was unemployed until he moved into the German Bundestag.

Political party

Schäfer was a member of the DKP from 1970 to 1988 , as well as the Marxist student union Spartakus and from 1993 to 1999 of the SPD. He has been a member of the PDS since 2000. From 2003 to 2007 he was state chairman of the PDS in North Rhine-Westphalia together with Ulrike Detjen , from May to October 2007 he was deputy state chairman in the transitional board. From 2004 to 2006 he was also a member of the party executive of the Linkspartei.PDS.

MP

From 2005 to 2013 Paul Schäfer was a member of the German Bundestag , chairman of the left-wing parliamentary group in the defense committee and its defense and disarmament policy spokesman.

He was always drawn into the Bundestag via the state list of North Rhine-Westphalia . In 2013 he was no longer on the state list for the federal elections and left parliament at the end of September 2013.

Social offices

Schäfer is a member of the supervisory board of the Center for International Peace Operations , the advisory board of the “Natural Scientists Initiative Responsibility for Peace and Sustainability” and the “European Security and Future of the Bundeswehr” commission of the Institute for Peace Research and Security Policy .
