Tikei is an upscale atoll in the South Pacific . It belongs to the Îles du Roi Georges , a small group of islands in the northwest of the Tuamotu Archipelago in French Polynesia . Administratively, Tikei belongs to the Takaroa-Takapoto municipality .
Located in a slightly isolated position, the 4 km² island is one of four coral islands (along with a further 74 atolls ) of the Tuamotus.
Tikei was discovered in May 1722 by the Dutchman Jakob Roggeveen , who called the island "Carlshoff". The Russian navigator Otto von Kotzebue came to the island in 1816 and named it "Romanzow Island" after the main sponsor of his expedition.
The island is uninhabited, but is occasionally visited by residents of the neighboring islands to fish or collect crayfish.
