copra
The copra is the dried core meat of coconuts , from which coconut oil is obtained. The name comes from the word koppara from Malayalam , which in that language "desiccated coconut" is.
Manufacturing
Copra extraction in the coconut plantations takes place in several steps. First the coconuts are peeled and split. The coconut fibers are used, among other things, as a filler for mattresses . The split coconut halves are then heated for approx. 24 hours in an oven or a heatable room to remove moisture from the pulp . After cooling, the pulp, now called copra, comes off the skin easily. The bowls are processed into activated charcoal , for example, or into everyday objects such as vessels, buttons, rings or souvenirs. The copra obtained is processed into desiccated coconut or pressed in an oil mill and the oil is collected. Remaining copra residues ( pomace ) serve as animal feed.
Economical meaning
In the German colony of Samoa , copra was the main export product, which made the colony profitable as one of the few German possessions of the time. The Philippines was the world's largest in 2010 with an annual volume of 15.54 million tons of coconut oil supplier (exports 85%) and were in a tough competition with the palm oil suppliers Malaysia and Indonesia . For example, while coconut oil was traded at US $ 770 / t FOB ( free on board ) in December 1998 , the price for palm oil was US $ 625 / t FOB. At the end of 2015, the price of palm oil was around US $ 500 / t.
One beetle that often occurs in large numbers on copra is the copra beetle .
