Timothy Lennart Kopra (born April 9, 1963 in Austin , Texas , USA ) is a former American astronaut . He left NASA on October 1, 2018.

Start of career

Kopra graduated from McCallum High School, Austin, where he was born in 1981. In 1985 he graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point with a bachelor's degree in science. He received his master's degree in aerospace engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology in 1995 . At the US Army War College, he did a Masters in Tactics in 2006.

NASA

In September 1998, Kopra came to NASA as a test engineer. At that time he was employed in the area of ​​space shuttle launches and field missions for the structure of the ISS. In 2000 he was elected to NASA's 18th astronaut group and trained as a mission specialist for two years. His specialty is technical support for space work. Among other things, he worked in the space shuttle office on the computer network for the ISS. After learning the Russian language, copra began preparing for a long term stay in space in July 2005. After graduation, he trained at all international training centers and was planned as a replacement for ISS expeditions 16 and 17 .

ISS expedition 20

Kopra was a member of ISS Expedition 20 from July to August 2009 . The start took place with STS-127 on July 15, 2009. Kopra replaced the Japanese Kōichi Wakata as ISS flight engineer. On July 18, Kopra carried out a space exit with David Wolf . Three types of work were carried out: start of assembly of the Japanese ISS module Kibō , preparation of the exchange of an ammonia tank for a later shuttle mission and completion of work on interconnection point P3, which was not yet completed by STS-119 . The return flight to earth took place with STS-128 on September 12, 2009. Copra was replaced by NASA astronaut Nicole Stott .

STS-133

One week after his return from his first space flight, on September 18, 2009, he was named as a mission specialist for flight STS-133 (ISS-ULF-5). After being injured in a bicycle accident on January 15, 2011, NASA announced Steve Bowen as his replacement, as the expected full recovery was not expected by the start date.

ISS expedition 46/47

Kopra was nominated by NASA on September 30, 2013 for another long-term stay on board the ISS. The Soyuz TMA-19M launch took place on December 15, 2015. Tim Kopra was part of ISS Expedition 46, along with Yuri Malentschenko and Timothy Peake . On February 29, 2016, he took command of Expedition 47 . The return was on June 18, 2016. During the flight, Kopra performed two spacecraft missions: December 21, 2015 with Scott Kelly and January 15, 2016 with Timothy Peake.
