Skjervøy ( Sami : Skiervá , Kvenisch : Kierua ) is a municipality in Northern Norway in the province ( Fylke ) Troms og Finnmark .
It is spread over several islands in the North Sea, the largest of which is Arnøya. By far the largest part of the population lives on the eponymous, quite small island of Skjervøy (around 2000 inhabitants). The place is dominated by fishing and shipping. Skjervøy is the permanent mooring point for Hurtigruten ships.
The history of the place can be traced back to the Stone Age based on finds . In the past, the Skjervøy trading post was owned by the Christian Michelsen Heggelund's family, who handled trade with the city of Bergen . The writer Petter Dass described it. The village church of Skjervøy was built in 1721 and is therefore the oldest wooden church in the former Fylke Troms . The city at the end of the 19th century by the application of which was known Fram with Fridtjof Nansen in 1896 after a three-year expedition in the Arctic Ocean .
