The Harstad / Narvik Airport (norw. Harstad / Narvik lufthavn, Evenes ) is a commercial airport in the municipality of Evenes , Province of Nordland , Northern Norway. A small part of the airport site is located in the neighboring municipality of Tjeldsund , Troms og Finnmark province . The Royal Norwegian Air Force used the airport as a military airfield under the name Evenes flystasjon u. a. as a base for combat aircraft .

The eponymous cities are 35 kilometers ( Harstad ) and 31 kilometers ( Narvik ) from the airport. The regional airport Narvik-Framnes , which is close to the city, was used for regional flights until April 2017 .

Transport links

The airport is located directly on European route 10 and has regular bus connections to Harstad and Narvik as well as to other municipalities in Vesterålen , Lofoten and the mainland.

Airport facilities

The terminal building has five gates and two baggage carousels. There is also a café, car rentals, ATMs and other services. A total of 1000 parking spaces are available for private transport.

As a commercial airport, Harstad / Narvik is equipped with several instrument approach procedures to enable approaches even in bad weather.

Name discussion

Since the airport opened in 1973 as Evenes flyplass, there has been intense discussion about the official name. In the following years this led to a total of six name changes:

  • Evenes lufthavn
  • Evenes stamflyplass
  • Harstad-Narvik lufthavn, Evenes
  • Harstad Lufthavn, Evenes
  • Harstad / Narvik airway
  • Harstad / Narvik lufthavn, Evenes

One of the reasons for this was the similarity of the name to the (regional) airport Narvik (norw. Narvik lufthavn, Framnes ), which was closed in 2017 , which has already led to misunderstandings in the past. A current consideration is to rename the airport in "Lofoten International Airport".

Military use

The Luftforsvaret has started the modernization of the Evenes "flight station", which from 2016 as an advanced base u. a. for quick reaction alert missions of F-16 and a few years later F-35 . The base should be able to accommodate up to fifteen combat aircraft . The military calculates 1600 aircraft movements annually.

After the planned evacuation of the P-3 in Andøya , which is about 94 kilometers further north, which is planned for a few years , the air forces will give up the Andøya base for cost reasons and will station the successor model in Evenes.
