Masoala is a genus of palm trees and occurs only in Madagascar .

features

The representatives are massive, fiederblättrige, monoecious palms. One of the two species has a stocky trunk and leaves with many leaflets , the other almost undivided, upright leaves. The large inflorescence consists of a long peduncle covered by the spathe with long, worm-like yellowish side branches at its end. The flowers are on these side branches . The fruits are round and brownish yellow.

Systematics

The genus Masoala Jum. is placed within the family in the subfamily Arecoideae, Tribe Areceae, Subtribus Dypsidinae.

There are two types of it:

The genus is named after the Masoala area, where Masoala madagascariensis occurs.

Endangerment and Use

Both species are rare and considered endangered. They are seldom cultivated. They grow slowly and are sensitive to frost.
