The Gamle Strynefjellsvegen (German: Alte Strynefjell-Straße ), officially Riksvei 258 (Reichsstraße 258), is a 27 km long, narrow gravel road in Norway that is only open to traffic from May to September. It connects the places Grotli and Videseter across the Strynefjell plateau . The highest point of the route is at 1139 m.

Strynefjell plateau

In 1881 it was decided to build the road to create a paved connection between the municipalities of Skjåk in the highlands and Stryn by the fjord. In 1894, after twelve years of construction, during which the road was chopped, blasted and milled by hand from the rock in the snow-free summer months, the inauguration. It was not until 1978 that a new, 12 km long and year-round road with three tunnels replaced Gamle Strynefjellsvegen as the main traffic route. In 1997 Strynefjellsvegen was declared a “ national tourist route ”.

The Gamle Strynefjellsvegen leads directly past one of Norway's most famous summer ski areas . A chair lift leads from the road up to the Tystigen glacier , on which several slopes are available.

The Øvstebrufossen waterfall is also right on the path .
