Summer ski area
A summer ski area (alternative spelling: -schi- ) is part of a normal ski area, where skiing can also be practiced in the summer months, especially in June, July and August. Such ski areas are mostly located in the high mountains , i. H. over about 2500 m, and on glaciers. They generally only have a few lifts, but they are the heart of the entire ski area. The glaciers in the Alps have receded sharply since the 1990s. Therefore, some summer ski areas had to stop operating.
In winter the highest lifts are not always in operation. With clouds and blowing snow in the lower area, the highest slopes can be in the sunshine.
Technical and environmental issues
Since most of the summer ski areas are located on glaciers and they are constantly in motion, you will usually find conventional ski lifts and no chairlifts in the summer ski areas. This makes it easier to move the masts back to their original position if they have been moved by the movement of the glacier.
