The Triftgletscher is a glacier on the orographic right side of the Saas Valley , in the Weissmies group in the eastern Valais Alps , in the canton of Valais of Switzerland . It has a length of about 2.5 km and covers an area of about 2 km².
The Trift glacier starts at the summit of the Weissmies at an altitude of just over 4000 m. First of all, the glacier flows down the slope with a gradient of up to 60% into a Karmulde. Then it moves further west and ends at 2750 m. Its meltwater is carried away from the Triftbach , which flows into the Saas Vispa near Saas-Grund . In its upper area, the Trift Glacier is connected to the firn field of the Mällagletscher , another glacier on the western flank of the Weissmies.
The area of the Trift Glacier is accessible by a gondola lift with two sections from Saas-Grund . The Hohsaas mountain station, newly built in 2005, is located north of the glacier at 3142 m.
In September 2017, 220 residents of Saas-Grund were evacuated due to the threat of a glacier collapse. The glacier break-off did not finally reach the village.
