The Triftgletscher is a glacier on the south side of the Zinalrothorns , northwest of Zermatt in the Swiss Alps , in the canton of Valais of Switzerland . It has a length of 3 km and covers an area of 2.4 km².
The Trift Glacier starts on the southern flank of the Zinalrothorn at an altitude of around 3800 m . At first it flows down the slope with a gradient of up to 60% to the south. At an altitude of about 3200 m , the glacier crosses a Karmulde and has only a minimal incline over a length of 1 km. The hollow is dominated in the west by the Trifthorn ( 3728 m ) and the Wellenkuppe ( 3903 m ). The glacier drains via the Triftbach , which flows into the Matter Vispa near Zermatt .
In its high stage during the Little Ice Age , the Trift Glacier reached about 1 km further down the valley over the steep slope in its current tongue area. It formed together with the Gabelhorn Glacier to the south , which originated on the eastern flank of the Ober Gabelhorn . a wide tongue flap at about 2550 m above the Triftalp. After the glacier retreat, two small lakes formed in the area of the former ground moraines.
The Rothornhütte of the Swiss Alpine Club SAC is located east of the Trift Glacier at an altitude of 3,196 m . It serves as the starting point for climbing the Zinalrothorn.
