history

The name of the place goes back to the old Norwegian word Grjot ( German stone ). For several centuries there was a stone shelter here, which provided protection for those traveling through the mountains. In 1870 the shelter was extended to the refuge when the road leading from Skjåk west to Stryn and Geiranger was built. A state mountain inn was created. In 1894 the Gamle Strynefjellsvegen, which leads south, was opened. Grotli had a function as a hub. A post office, a switchboard and a transfer option between bus lines were created. In 1896 the Norwegian writer Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson stayed at the mountain inn . From 1903 to 1905, today's Hotel Grotli Høyfjellshotell was built, which was later expanded and now has 125 beds in 53 rooms and a restaurant. The Siamese King Chulalongkorn stayed in the hotel in 1907 .

In 1940 a German military aircraft was shot down near the village during World War II . The film Into the White , shot in 2012, focuses on history.
