action

The historical film deals with the encounter between two British soldiers and three German soldiers in Norway during the Second World War in 1940.

The Heinkel He 111 of the pilot Leutnant Horst Schopis was shot down over Norway near Grotli near Skjåk by a British Blackburn Skua plane and crash-landed. Lieutenant Schopis, Sergeant Strunk and Corporal Josef Schwartz survived the impact, another member of the crew died. Schwartz is also injured in the crash. After spending the first night in a self-dug hole, the survivors find an abandoned hunting lodge in the middle of a snow storm. Only a short time later they are surprised by Captain Davenport and his crew member Smith. The two were the crew of the British fighter who attacked the German bomber and was also damaged in the aerial combat. They also crashed nearby. While Josef wants to shoot the two British people, Schopis sees them as valuable hostages. After Josef shows himself unable to put his wish into practice, Davenport and Smith are also taken into the hut. The more desperate the situation in the abandoned hut without food becomes, the more and more the two groups come together. Josef's condition worsened due to the wound he suffered in the crash. At the climax, on Davenport's advice, Schopis and Strunk are forced to amputate Josef's wounded arm. To do this, they use a trick to get Josef drunk with schnapps, which they had recently found under the floor of the hut along with other reserves. After the successful amputation, the group wants to make their way to the coast the next day, especially since the snow storm has cleared. Smith and Strunk, who have become friends, scout the area on skis. Strunk is shot dead by approaching Norwegian soldiers who were on patrol because of the German aircraft wreck. Schopis and Josef are captured, while Davenport and Smith are suspected of collaborating with the enemy. The film ends with Davenport and Smith looking at the rowing boat at Grotli harbor on which Schopis and Josef are being taken away.

background

Replica of a He-111 wreck for the film

The film is based on a true story from the life of Lieutenant Horst Schopis. He and Josef, who was called Josef Auchtor in real life, were interned in Canadian prison camps for several years after their capture . Karl-Heinz Strunk was buried in a German military cemetery in Trondheim . The fourth crew member, Hans Hauck, died in the crash. The British aviators, who were called Captain Richard Thomas Partridge and RS Bostok in real life, returned to England and again flew missions over Norway. They were shot down one more time, and Bostok died in the attack. Partridge fell into German captivity, which lasted until the end of the war. In 1977 Horst Schopis and Richard Thomas Partridge met in England on friendly terms. Partridge died in 1990, Schopis died in 2011 at the age of 99.

The wreck of the English machine is currently on display in a Fleet Air Arm museum in Yeovilton. The German aircraft wreck lay near Lake Heilstugu near Grotli until 1976 and was then taken to the Norwegian Air Force Museum in Gardermoen .

Both Horst Schopis (anti- air combatants became friends ) and Richard Thomas Partridge ( Operation Skua ) wrote about these events in their memoirs.

reception

Reviews

Into the White received mixed reviews, some of them rather bad. Of eight Rotten Tomatoes critics evaluated , the film received 50 percent positive and negative ratings.

“A promising initial idea, impressive landscape shots and unmistakably good intentions are not enough for a well-rounded film. The actors in this international co-production seem like a bunch of people from all over the world. In view of the anything but subtle dialogues, the individual actors rarely have the chance to make a lasting impression. "

- movie starts

“Florian Lucas is a sleek German lieutenant who believes he must have every situation under control. David Kross is a committed young Nazi who constantly quotes from Hitler's 'Mein Kampf' and would like to destroy the enemy immediately, and Stig Henrik Hoff, as a sergeant, is a proletarian soldier with fat muscles and country humor. On the British side, Lachlan Nieboer is a cultivated and always ironic gentleman as the pilot and Rupert Grint is a young rebel from the working-class neighborhoods of Liverpool. In his first role after the Harry Potter series, he is clearly used as the popular figure, but his character also remains diffuse, so that Ron Weasley still shines through with him. The story of these five people may be true, but it is not well told. "
