Møre og Romsdal ( German  Möre and Romsdal ) is the northernmost province ( Fylke ) of the Vestlandet region in Norway . There live 265,238 inhabitants (February 27, 2020) in 26 municipalities on an area of 14,359 square kilometers with a population density of 18.5 inhabitants per square kilometer. Its capital is Molde , but Ålesund is the largest municipality . Møre og Romsdal borders the provinces of Innlandet , Trøndelag and Vestland .

Before the reform of 1919, the province was called Romsdals amt and was divided into the Vogteien (fogderi) Nordmøre , Romsdal and Sunnmøre . The coat of arms of the district shows three stylized Viking ships, one for each bailiwick.

The north-east, i.e. Romsdal, is in some ways also considered Central Norway together with Trøndelag .

Municipalities

On January 1, 2019, Rindal moved to Fylke Trøndelag . On January 1st, 2020 the following parishes were merged:

In addition, the Hornindal municipality from Sogn og Fjordane changed and merged with Volda. Halsa, however, united with Hemne and part of Snillfjord , both in Trøndelag, at home and thus left Møre og Romsdal.
