geography

The smallest municipality in the Fylke with cliffs up to 156 meters high was located about in the middle of Møre og Romsdal, west of Midsund and Molde directly on the Atlantic . Sandøy expanded from north to south across the associated Harøyfjorden by 20.7 kilometers and from east to west by 25.1 kilometers. Since the municipality consisted of the islands of Harøy, Havær, Husøy, Lyngvær, Sandøy and a few smaller islands, it only had a land area of 19 square kilometers, on which 1238 inhabitants lived (as of January 1, 2019). The islands are partly connected to each other by bridges, the best known leads from the island of Harøya to Finnøya , as well as by ferry boats.

The neighboring communes of Sandøy were Aukra , Haram and Midsund.
