Midsund is a place and a former municipality in the Central Norwegian Fylke Møre og Romsdal . As part of the municipal reform in Norway , Midsund and Nesset were merged with Molde , the administrative center of the Fylke, on January 1, 2020 .

Geography of the former commune

Midsund commune coat of arms

In 2019, people lived in the municipality (as of January 1, 2019) on an area of around 95 square kilometers with a population density of 21 inhabitants per square kilometer. The place of administration was Midsund. Other places worth mentioning were Ugelvik and Tangen on the north side, Ramsvik on the south-west side, and south and north Hegdal on the south side. The commune number was 1545.

Typical fell landscape on Øtrøy

The municipality, with mountains up to 740 meters high, stretched 15.9 kilometers from north to south and 27.5 kilometers from east to west. The municipality included the islands of Dryna, Midøy, Magerøy, Otrøy, Tautra and around 200 other small islands. Many islands are connected by bridges or fortified dams.

Neighboring municipalities were Aukra , Haram , Molde, Sandøy and Vestnes .

Large parts of the archipelago consist of the typical Norwegian fell landscape . The island of Midøya actually consists almost entirely of mountains. The settlements are all on the consistently narrow coastal strip, in the back of which there is a mountain range that dominates the island. Strictly speaking, the islands are nothing more than mountains of the Scandinavian mountains that are not under water.

Transport links

Ferry quay on the mainland (Mordalsvagen)

The archipelago is connected to mainland Norway by two ferries that run several times a day. One drives on the western tip from Drynaholmen to Brattvag, the other from the eastern tip near Solholmen to Mordalsvagen. The ferry company is Fjord1 .

In addition, two tunnel projects are being planned, one of which will connect Drynaholmen and Brattvag and the other will connect large parts of Norway with the equally planned huge offshore park on Aukra .

From a large-scale perspective, the region around the archipelago can be reached by car via the E6 (from Oslo to Domås) and from there via the E136 (past Åndalsnes via Molde and then to Mordalsvagen).

The island can also be reached by plane via Ålesund and its Vigra airport .

tourism

There is a campsite on the main island of Øtrøy on the north side, which is particularly suitable for anglers who want to fish for several days on the island. The south side houses a hut rental in the village of Hegdal with rentable boats. You can fish from land or rent a small boat. There is also a tourist office in the largest city, Midsund, which is centrally located between the islands. The cities of Molde, Ålesund , Geiranger and the Trollstigen are often visited from the archipelago .

Abundance of fish in the island area

Cod , plaice , haddock , saithe and sea wolf are mainly caught in the water around the islands .

Infrastructure

The island has a primary school and a secondary school, both of which are located on the largest island, Øtrøy. In Midsund itself you will find several supermarkets, a bank, a post office, a flower shop, a hairdresser, a gas station, several cafes and a dentist. A church with an adjoining cemetery can be found in Ugelvik.
