Road over the waterfall

The Trollstigen ( Norwegian for the troll ladder ) is one of the most famous tourist routes in Norway , about 20 km south of Åndalsnes . It is the north side of a pass road that leads south from Romsdalsfjord to Norddalsfjord, a branch of the Storfjord .

General

The Trollstigen is part of the Provincial Road 63 and leads from Isterdal in eleven hairpin bends with an incline of around twelve percent up to the top of the pass . He overcomes a height difference of 405 m and reaches 700  moh. In the further course the road reaches a height of 850 m. Halfway along the road, which is part of the Golden Route , also leads over a waterfall, the 320-meter-high Stigfossen . The pass road is framed by the mountains Bispen (German “the Bishop”, 1,450 m), Kongen (German “the King”, 1,614 m) and Dronninga (German “the Queen”, 1,701 m). Due to the weather, the route is only open in summer and can be used from around mid-May or early June to late September.

The road was opened to traffic on July 31, 1936 after eight years of construction by King Haakon VII . Even today it is only a few meters wide, sometimes almost one lane, so that you have to avoid oncoming vehicles. Because of the rugged terrain, there are hardly any opportunities to stop. Only up at the beginning of a high valley can you linger in a large parking lot or stop in the Trollstigen Fjellstue . A walk of a few hundred meters takes the visitor to Utsikten (Eng. "The view"), a lookout point from which one can see the entire course of the street. Trollstigen was officially inaugurated as the Norwegian Scenic Route on June 16, 2012 .

Hundreds of thousands of tourists drive over the Trollstigen every year (529,800 in 2004). A lot of money is also invested in protection against falling rocks and avalanches . In the summer of 2005, after a rock fall , part of the route was renewed for 16 million Norwegian kroner (approx. Two million euros). Not only did the valley section get a new route, but some characteristic curves have also been defused. However, the overall impression of the street has been preserved.
