Location and dates

Åndalsnes has 2,231 inhabitants and is located on the Isfjord , an arm of the Romsdalsfjord , in northern Vestlandet in Norway . The Rauma flows into the fjord in the locality. The place can be reached by Raumabanen or by car from Dombås via the E136 through the Romsdalen valley .

Many cruise ships also dock in the port of the small town.

history

Already in the 19th century the place was the starting point for trips to Romsdalen and the Romsdal Alps. The Raumabanen railway , which was completed in 1924, starts in Åndalsnes. In 1940 the city was almost completely destroyed by bombing.

Åndalsnes is a popular starting point for excursions in the surrounding area with tourists. On the summer weekends, a museum train hauled by a steam locomotive runs on the Raumabanen railway from Åndalsnes to Bjorli and back. Åndalsnes is also popular as a starting point for the trip over the Trollstigen , which winds its way up 18 kilometers with a gradient of 12% in impressive serpentines to the top of the pass, from where you have a wonderful view before continuing towards Geiranger . The Stave Church Rødven with a nave and south porch of the 13th century is also near the town.
