Vestlandet ("the Westland") is called the western part of Norway on the North Sea and the European Arctic Ocean in the local language .

It comprises the three provinces ( Fylker ) Rogaland , Vestland and Møre og Romsdal and has an area of 58,582 km 2 . Around 1,382,000 people live in the Vestlandet region, or around a quarter of the Norwegian population (as of 2020). The largest cities are Bergen (284,000 inhabitants) and Stavanger (144,000 inhabitants).

The other four parts of the country are called Nord-Norge (Northern Norway), Trøndelag, Sørlandet (Südland) and Østlandet (Ostland)

Historical development

The geographical area has a long tradition that goes back to before the unification of Norway. Many districts represented small domains, later they were led by feudal men of the king until the Vogt system was introduced in the Danish era. The traditional administrative structure was abolished in 1837 through a regional reform (formannsskapslovene) .

The spatial cohesion in Vestlandet is strengthened , among other things, by the dialect and the pronounced self-confidence of the population. Regional planning and cooperation between the municipalities give the part of the country current importance.

There are 15 "districts" in Vestlandet:

climate

Vestlandet is one of the wettest regions in Europe. The amount of precipitation in the mountains along the coasts averages 3,500 mm per year, in peak years even up to 5,000 mm per year. The city of Bergen has an average rainfall of 2,250 mm per year. The cause is u. a. the Gulf Stream , to which the region owes a milder climate than would actually be deduced from its geographical location. Rain is therefore not uncommon on the coast, even in winter.

language

In Vestlandet, Nynorsk is a widely used variant of the Norwegian language .

traffic

The traditional mail line Hurtigruten has its starting point in Bergen and serves several coastal cities in northern Vestlandet. Two Fjord Line car ferries run daily between Bergen and Stavanger and the Danish Hirtshals . The coastal cities are connected by road via the European route 39 , which begins in the north near Trondheim and extends in the south in Kristiansand via a car ferry to Aalborg in Denmark . Several cities have airports that connect them internationally, with the capital Oslo , other parts of the country, and with each other. There are also train connections between Oslo and Bergen and Stavanger and Kristiansand .
