Sogn is a historical district in the western part of Norway , in the former province ( Fylke ) Sogn og Fjordane (merged into Vestland in 2020 ). The landscape surrounds the Sognefjord . Sogn consists of the municipalities of Aurland , Hyllestad , Høyanger , Gulen , Luster , Lærdal , Sogndal , Solund , Vik and Årdal .

The name is very old and has its origin in the name of the fjord (Sognefjord). The word is derived from súga ' to suck' and refers to the strong currents of the tides at the mouth of the fjord.
