Rødven Stave Church

The Stave Church Rødven is a Norwegian stave church in Rauma in the province of Møre og Romsdal . Today the church belongs to the Fortidsminneforeningen antiquity association .

history

The time of construction can be dated to around 1200, whereby the church was first mentioned in 1589. Around 1600 the originally simple long church with its rectangular nave was heavily rebuilt. The original stave choir was replaced by a log choir and the arcade that flanked the church was removed. The roof including the ridge turret and the outer cladding are also more recent . Documented is a storm in 1689 that severely damaged the church and the tower.

Architecture and interior

A special feature are the diagonal supports as in the Kvernes stave church . It is not known since when these were installed. The church has a north and a south portal, the latter consisting of interwoven half-columns with archivolts and leaf carvings. The interior of the church was painted in the 17th and 18th centuries. The church has a life-size Gothic crucifix from the second half of the 13th century, which probably originally came from the choir opening (triumphal arch) and has been called the triumphal cross since then .
