Fortidsminneforeningen
Fortidsminneforeningen is a Norwegian association for the preservation of cultural and historical monuments. The association is based in Oslo and has around 8,000 members.
It was founded in 1844 under the name Foreningen til norske Fortidsminnesmerkers Bevaring . The founding fathers included the painters Joachim Frich and Johan Christian Clausen Dahl , as well as several historians and archaeologists. The society emerged from a movement that campaigned for the preservation of the stave churches , which threatened to disappear in the 19th century. The reason for the disappearance was the population growth in many Norwegian communities. Most of the old stave churches had become too small for the community and had to be replaced by larger new buildings. A 600-year-old cultural treasure threatened to disappear in Norway.
Before the founding of the association, the founding fathers first dealt with the relocation of the Wang Stave Church , which was acquired by the Prussian king in 1841 and rebuilt in Brückenberg near Krummhübel from 1842 to 1844, today part of the Polish town of Karpacz in the Giant Mountains. After this successful campaign, the association was founded. Thanks to the association, 29 of the 30 preserved stave churches with medieval structures still stand today worldwide. Today he owns forty buildings himself, such as the stave churches Borgund , Hopperstad , Kaupanger , Kvernes , Nore , Rødven , Torpo , Uvdal and Urnes as well as other buildings such as churches in a different architectural style, chapels, monasteries, the Lysøen villa on Os (Hordaland) or old houses .
