The Stave Church Uvdal ( Norwegian Uvdal stavkirke ) is a stave church in the Norwegian municipality Nore og Uvdal in the province Viken . It is believed to date from around AD 1200.

The stave church of Uvdal is counted among the "single-masted stave churches" of the Numedal type . However, the original building was rebuilt and changed many times until the 19th century.

Today the church belongs to the Fortidsminneforeningen antiquity association .

Facility

There is a wooden baptismal font and a crucifix from the 14th century in the church. A medieval chandelier hangs in the choir. The railing on the gallery above the entrance contains ornate carvings. A 30 centimeter high crucifix is now on display in the Historical Museum in Oslo. It comes from Limoges in the 13th century. The entrance portal, which is now protected by the entrance porch, contains carved scenes from sagas .

history

Presumably there was a church building at this point before today's stave church was built. The exact date of construction of the stave church is unknown, but is mostly believed to be in the late 12th century. An indication of this are 500 coins found under the ground during excavations in 1987. Dendrochronological studies indicate that the still insufficiently dried tree trunks were felled in 1168, so that this is assumed to be a probable construction date.

The nave was originally almost square in shape with a small choir , to which an apse in the shape of a semicircle was attached. There were no windows, just two small openings for light high up, and simple benches on the walls. The church was surrounded by an arcade . In the pre-Reformation period, the apse was removed and the choir expanded as the nave was lengthened towards the entrance. In 1620 the first two windows were installed, in 1624 the benches were installed. After the Reformation in the 30s of the 16th century, several further extensions took place and the church was painted for the first time in 1656 by an unknown artist with a decoration of Bible texts, flowers, fruits and tendril patterns. At that time it was already equipped with a pulpit and an altar with an altarpiece by an artist from the town (the Last Supper is shown). Further extensions took place in 1684, and the representation of the Fall of Man in the choir may also come from this period. In the 20s and 30s of the 18th century the arcade was demolished and the church was converted into a cruciform church. The entrance porch was also built at this time. In the course of the work, the longitudinal walls were opened; Most of them were reused, but repainted in a very different style. The sacristy was added in 1819, and there have been hardly any changes since then.
