Kvernes stave church
The Stave Church Kvernes is a Norwegian stave church on the peninsula Averøya ten kilometers south of Kristiansund province Møre og Romsdal .
The church was first mentioned in a document in 1432, but is probably much older. It was originally a single-nave hall church with a choir the width of the nave, but was heavily rebuilt in the 17th century. In 1633 a choir and a sacristy in block construction were added. At the same time, a baptistery was probably built from material from the earlier church at the west end of the church and it was given additional exterior cladding.
A striking feature of today's church are outer diagonal columns. It is not known when these were added. A mast in the middle of the ship supports the roof. The nave was richly painted with tendrils in 1630 and 1650. The tower bell comes from the JF Weule foundry . The church has a shrine on the altar panel with the image of Mary and her mother and the child Jesus.
Today the church belongs to the Fortidsminneforeningen antiquity association .
The Kvernes Tingsted stone circle is across the street .
