It belongs to the upper reaches of the Amazon , whose origin can be found in the Vilcanota mountain range south of Cuzco . It springs from the slopes of the Nevado Mismi and is called first Río Hornillos , then Río Apurímac and Río Ene , before its waters become the Río Tambo .
River course
The Río Tambo forms at the confluence of the Río Perené and Río Ene in the municipality of Puerto Prado at an altitude of 400 m above sea level.
The river first flows 70 km in an easterly direction, on the southern edge of the Gran Pajonal , and then swings north for another 90 km, making its total length 160 km.
In the city of Atalaya ( ⊙ ) at 287 m above sea level, the Río Tambo unites with the Río Urubamba and is then called Río Ucayali in the further course .
