The Río Tambo district is located in the Satipo Province in the Junín administrative region in central Peru . The district was established on January 29, 1943. It has an area of ​​10,213 km². The 2017 census counted 29,131 inhabitants. In 1993 the population was 9155, in 2007 it was 32,575. The administrative center is the 275  m high village of Puerto Prado with 256 inhabitants (as of 2017). Puerto Prado is located at the confluence of Río Perené and Río Ene to Río Tambo , 45 km east-northeast of the provincial capital Satipo .

Geographical location

The Río Tambo district extends over the east of the Satipo Province. The Río Perené crosses the northwest of the district, the Río Tambo the northeast. The Río Ene forms the southwestern boundary of the district. In the east, the district boundary runs along the watershed to the Río Urubamba, which runs further east .

The Río Tambo district borders in the west with the districts Vizcatán del Ene , Pangoa and Mazamari , in the northwest with the districts Satipo , Río Negro and Pichanaqui ( province Junín ), in the north with the districts Puerto Bermúdez ( province Oxapampa ) and Raimondi ( province Atalaya) ), in the east to the districts of Sepahua (also in the province of Atalaya) and Echarati ( province of La Convención ) and in the south to the districts of Kimbiri and Pichari (both in the province of La Convención).
