The Sepahua district is located in the Atalaya Province in the Ucayali region in eastern Peru . The district was established on June 1, 1982. It has an area of 7752 km². In the 2017 census, there were 8,264 residents in the district. In 1993 the population was 3698, in 2007 it was 6670. The district administration is located in the small town of Sepahua with 3088 inhabitants (as of 2017) at an altitude of about 280 m . Sepahua is located at the mouth of the Río Sepahua in the Río Urubamba , 90 km southeast of the provincial capital Atalaya . Sepahua has an airfield. The area is mainly populated by the indigenous Sharanahua people. Various ethnic groups live in the area, including Piro, Arahuaca, Yaminahua, Matsiguenga, Ashaninga, Shara, Shipibo and Cocama.
Geographical location
The Sepahua district is on the western edge of the Amazon basin . The Río Urubamba crosses the western part of the district in a north-northwest direction. The watershed runs along the western border of the district to the Río Tambo , which runs further to the west . The extreme west is drained by the Río Sepa , the eastern part of the district mainly by the Río Sepahua. Along the southeastern border of the district, the Río Mishahua flows in a westerly direction to the Río Urubamba.
The district Sepahua bordered to the west by the district Río Tambo ( Province of Satipo ), in the northwest and north by the district Raimondi , in the northeast on the district Purús ( province of Purús ), in the southeast on the districts Iñapari ( province Tahuamanu ) Tambopata ( Province Madre de Dios ) and Fitzcarrald ( province of Manu ) and in the south to the district of Megantoni ( province of La Convención ).
